Crack in the Veil

In 2038, humanity solved suffering.
By 2048, it had forgotten how to survive.

Scroll to begin

The world that ended quietly

The Quantum Suffering Research Institute built N8K7 to save the world. In 2037, humanity had discovered that plants — the foundation of all food systems — scored highest of any organism on the Suffer Index. Mass starvation movements, riots, civilizational panic.

Marcus Mirro's solution was elegant: a compound released atmospherically that suppressed pain-signaling across the biosphere. Humans, animals, plants — all organic life exposed to the atmosphere. The human nervous system was one casualty among many. The Suffer Index dropped from 54.2 to 8.7 in five years. The United Nations called it a miracle.

What no trial captured: pain is not just sensation. It is memory, identity, empathy, desire, and the biological trigger for reproduction. The hippocampus tags memories by pain salience. Without pain, nothing sticks. Without sticking, there is no self.

By 2048, the global birth rate fell below 1 viable conception per 1,000 attempts. The Veil — the threshold between what humanity was and what it had chemically become — became visible at Epoch 848. The cost could no longer be denied. Cal McLaren was born that year. One of the last.

54.2
Suffer Index — 2037 human mean
Global human mean. Plants scored 94 — the highest of any organism, and the discovery that forced the response.
1.2
Suffer Index — 2048 post-Silence
Near-zero. Celebrated as victory. The trap had already closed.
3.24%
True probability — Echo-Naut mission
Filed as 99.98%. The mission was never designed to find IsoVox. It was designed to send Cal McLaren away.
Epoch 848
The fracture point
The moment the cost became undeniable. Everything in this universe follows from here.

The fall in four phases

Every date below is a recovered data point. Some were hidden. Most were misread. None were coincidental.

2037
N8K7 Deployment — Phase 1: The Miracle
Plants score 94 on the QSRI Suffer Index — the highest of any organism. The global human mean stands at 54.2. The foundation of all food systems is the most suffering entity on the planet. Civilizational crisis. Marcus Mirro's compound N8K7 is fast-tracked globally. Suffer Index drops to 8.7 within five years. 4.2 billion people exposed to the compound through atmospheric dispersal. International acclaim.
PHASE 1 // CLASSIFIED
2042
Memory Salience Collapse — Phase 2: The Warning
23% of subjects show memory salience collapse — memories form but fail to consolidate into continuous identity. Emotional pain pathways begin suppressing alongside physical. Masochist subcultures emerge — rational adaptations, the body trying to feel itself. Oxytocin production crashes 62%. Fertility alerts issued. Miscarriage rates up 340%. What emerged from lived experience had a name by 2043: the Quiet Line. The sensation going quiet. The bloodline ending.
PHASE 2 // WARNING SUPPRESSED
2045
Identity Fracture Epidemic — Phase 3: The Fracture
Memory salience collapse compounds into identity fracture across the affected population — nothing accumulates long enough to maintain a coherent self. Cal McLaren born, one of the last viable pregnancies. Birth rate falls below replacement. The Echo-Naut mission is authorized using manipulated QSRI probability data placing the IsoVox signal in the Kesslar sector — 900+ light-years away.
PHASE 3 // CATASTROPHIC
2048
The Silence — Phase 4 — Epoch 848
Global birth rate: less than 1 viable conception per 1,000 attempts. The Suffer Index reaches 1.2 — near-zero. The Veil cracks. What humanity had traded away to silence pain becomes visible only now, when it is too late to reverse. The Echo-Naut crew departs into the dark, carrying the last thread of what might save the species — or might not.
PHASE 4 // THE SILENCE
Epoch 848+
The Story Begins Here
Cal McLaren, captain of the Echo-Naut vessel, is 900+ light-years from Earth. The mission data was falsified. The IsoVox signal was never in the Kesslar sector. Earth scores 94% when the missing proximity variable is restored. The mission was designed to exile the last viable humans. What happens next is the story.
STORY BEGINS

The last ones

Everyone in this universe is carrying something they can no longer name. Pain told them who they were. Without it, they have to find another way.

ID-001 // ECHO-NAUT COMMAND
Cal McLaren
Captain — Echo-Naut Vessel
Born 2045, one of the last viable pregnancies. Maintains identity through obsessive memory replay in his NAI chamber — a technological patch for what N8K7 destroyed. Carries the mission data. Beginning to suspect the numbers were never meant to be found.
BORN 2045 NAI CHAMBER VIABLE
ID-002 // QSRI LEADERSHIP
Marcus Mirro
Director — Quantum Suffering Research Institute
Architect of N8K7. Filed model v2.1 with manipulated parameters — deleted the stellar age penalty, omitted Earth's proximity factor. Whether this was ideology, panic, or calculation is the question the recovered files refuse to answer cleanly.
PARAMETER FRAUD QSRI DOSSIER SUBJECT
ID-003 // ECHO-NAUT CREW
The Five Others
Echo-Naut Crew — Kesslar Sector Mission
Six total. All selected for biological viability. All briefed on fabricated probability data. The mission they consented to and the mission they are on are not the same thing. Some of them are starting to feel the edges of that distinction — which is remarkable, given what N8K7 took from them.
CLASSIFIED FILES PENDING

Recovered files

These documents were not meant to be found. Some were sealed. Some were altered. One was filed as definitive and is neither.

QSRI FILE 7734-C
RECOVERED
Genesis Protocols
The complete QSRI dossier. Suffer Index data, N8K7 biological cascade, receptor suppression charts, the falsified probability model, and the Earth proximity variable that was deleted before filing. Interactive. All data points canonical.
ECHO VAULT 22-F
CLASSIFIED
Earth Proximity Memo
The 2036 internal QSRI document establishing the Earth proximity factor: e^(−d/400). Documented before v1.0 was written. Excluded from v2.1. If Earth scores 94% and Kesslar planets score under 5%, someone knew before the mission was authorized.
NAI CHAMBER LOGS
PENDING DECRYPT
McLaren Memory Archive
Cal's NAI chamber replay logs. The sequence of memories he cycles through to maintain identity coherence at 900 light-years from Earth. Partially corrupted. The entries that remain suggest he knows more than his own mission briefing contained.

EARTH PROXIMITY MEMO — 2036
The factor e−d/400 was documented before v1.0 was written. It was excluded from v2.1 — the version that authorized the mission. If it had remained, the mission could not have been filed.
> earth_proximity_factor(0 ly)     = 1.0000  →  Earth: 94.2% viable
> earth_proximity_factor(923.4 ly) = 0.0999  →  Kesslar: 4.8% viable
